History

In March 1997 five artists, living in Barry, got together and established Vale of Glamorgan Artists, known as VOGA. The membership now, nine years later, is more truly representative of the Vale of Glamorgan, with nineteen artists from Penarth, Sully, Cowbridge, Llantwit Major and Barry. The group was formed to make contemporary art more accessible by exhibiting members’ work locally and through contacts with community ventures and schools.

In its first ten years, VOGA has organised more than twenty exhibitions and events, ranging from Art in the High Street in 1998, to an exhibition at the Welsh Assembly Government, Cardiff Bay, in 2004. Exhibitions have been held in a wide range of locations within the Cardiff/Vale area, from the Norwegian Church and St David’s Hall, Cardiff, to the Washington Gallery, Penarth, several venues in Barry and Cowbridge, plus the St Donats Arts Centre in the west of the Vale. One of our largest events was the Open Studios, in 2002, with five exhibition venues and thirty-two artists participating, many of them opening their studios to the public.

Two major VOGA exhibitions were held in the Vale's twin towns of Rheinfelden, Germany and Fécamp, France, in 2005. VOGA thanks the Town Councils and the people of those towns, for the generous help and welcome we experienced during these events.
