As a child I was taught that children were to be 'seen and not heard.' When I became a mother I wanted my children to experience a sense of happiness and freedom, through encouragement, companionship and play. Through play it has been pleasure to watch my children develop into adults. I related to the French poem Come to the Edge attributed to Guillaume Apollinaire.
MMI felt 'the edge' in the poem was a metaphor for my children leaving home. I have continued working on a series painting depicting my role and experience as a mother storyboarding the different stages of their childhood. Patiently preparing, helping and watching them as they make their transition towards leaving home and becoming independent adults. They need guidance on their journey into adulthood and parents need patience, not to hurry them too quickly.
Come to the Edge
'Come to the edge,' he said.
'We can't. We're afraid,' they said.
'Come to the edge,' he said.
'We can't. We will fall,' they said.
'Come to the edge,' he said.
And they came.
And he pushed them.
And they flew.
Guillaume Apollinaire
