I am a self-taught painter in the plein-air tradition. I endeavour to use pure transparent watercolour to record the inherent and latent beauty I witness in our natural and man-made environments.
My current method of painting is to use an overall wash to set the scene and then to place lost and found shapes and edges to tease the image from its background. This hopefully results in simple, evocative slightly impressionistic paintings in the best tradition of pure watercolour. I believe that too much landscape painting is carried out from the relative safety of the studio and I paint outdoors in front of the subject as often as possible. I find this is a stimulating and rewarding way to work.
